Saturday 25 April 2015

During High School I studied both French and Spanish, although I did not pursue my French course in college. However, I took 2 more years of Spanish instead, graduating with good fluency. My boyfriend from Mexico was my inspiration that time. I was totally unaware of the benefits of a second language based on cognitive research up until recently. So, here are the top 6 benefits of learning a second language, affecting different areas and perspectives.

Benefits in Career – People who are knowledgeable and fluent in 2 languages, at least their native language and a second one, are more in demand than their competition when it comes to the job arena. They often top their competitors due to that second language. Hence, companies that tend to make their presence known internationally will most likely choose a candidate with an additional knowledge that is proficient in a second language.

Better Experiences in Travel – People who travel to another country and are proficient in speaking their native tongue will immediately establish a good relationship with them, immersing with the culture intimately, while learning things exceptionally compared to other foreigners or travelers. I have traveled throughout the South and Central Americas, dining with the “locals” and discussing about economics and politics. There is no doubt that my perceptions have broadened.

Grammatically Knowledgeable – I have discovered this benefit first hand that learning a second language also involves understanding and learning the grammatical structure of a native language. Certainly, learning the verb tenses of a second language made me better understand and identify its structure in English, thus, making me a better teacher.

Advantages in the Brain – Today, medical studies show that a foreign language or learning one improves the brain’s function. Based on other studies, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are also delayed later in life when a person is knowledgeable of a second or foreign language (Japanese translations). According to other studies, the attention mechanism area of the human brain tends to stretch and become active when older people learn a foreign language.

Cognitive Area – More recent studies indicate that households, wherein there are 2 spoken languages have children with better focus in school, and tend to have a lesser memory deficiency. Hence, they have better memory in remembering lists and sequences.

Personal Fulfillment – A feeling of fulfillment or satisfaction is likewise achieved when you learn a foreign language. I have always felt accomplished, happy, and respected every time I go to Mexican restaurants, conversing with the staff and children in Spanish. I have loved conversing and engaging with Hispanic families and people seem to be pleasantly surprised.

Children are able to learn things in their early stages, making it ideal to begin instructions and learning during their elementary years. But, adults and even senior citizens can still learn a foreign language, considering the immeasurable benefits!
